Alleghany Regional Jail

The Alleghany Regional Jail is at 268 West Main Street, Covington, VA 24426. It serves Alleghany County, Bath County, the City of Covington, and the towns of Clifton Forge and Iron Gate. The 56-bed facility opened in 2002. It has been at or near capacity in recent years, and some inmates may be moved to other regional jails.

The jail keeps a record on every person in custody under Va. Code § 53.1-116. Each file holds the booking date, charge, mugshot, and prints. To find out if someone is held there, call the jail. Staff can confirm bond, court dates, and visit times.

Adult booking photos are public under Va. Code § 2.2-3706. The jail can release them on request unless the photo would hurt an active felony case.

Note: The Alleghany Regional Jail is small. Some Alleghany County inmates may be housed at other regional jails when the facility is full.

Send a written FOIA request to the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office. State the record. Name the person. Add a date or case number. The office must reply in five working days. The sheriff can charge for the actual cost of the search and copies. Adult mugshots, charges, and arrest dates are public in most cases under § 2.2-3706. Be clear in your request. A vague ask can slow things down. The sheriff can deny part of a record but must say why.

Arrest and Booking Steps

An Alleghany County deputy may make an arrest under Va. Code § 19.2-82. For minor charges, the officer can issue a summons under § 19.2-74 and skip the jail booking. Serious charges go through the regional jail for full intake.

At intake, staff log the name, date, charge, and take the mugshot and prints. Sex offense arrests trigger registry duties under Va. Code § 9.1-913. The mugshot becomes part of the permanent file.

Note: Always ask for the case number when you call the sheriff. It speeds up records work and avoids mix-ups with people of the same name.
